水稲新品種「めばえもち」の育成

A new rice variety, "Mebaemochi" is a glutinous rice variety with giant embryo developed at Hokuriku Research Center of the National Agricultural Research Center (former Hokuriku National Agricultural Experiment Station) of National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) in 2002. To develop a new variety with giant embryo, "Mebaemochi" was selected from the progenies of the cross between "EM-40" and "Kokonoemochi" in 1988. "EM-40" was a backcrossed line between "Kinmaze" and a mutant with giant embryo elected "Kinmaze" treated with N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) at the Kyushu University. A selected promising line was named Hokuriku-mochi 167 in the F_7 generation to be submitted to local adaptability trials at various locations. Hokuriku-mochi 167 was registered as Paddy Rice Norin-mochi 382 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and was named as "Mebaemochi" in 2002. This variety has the same maturing stage of "Koganemochi". Culm length is about 16cm shorter than that of "Koganemochi", panicle length is slightly longer than that of "Koganemochi", and panicle number is more than that of "Koganemochi", and plant type is semi-panicle number type. Apiculus color is red brown. This variety is a high fertilizer-response variety, and yield is more than that of "Koganemochi" in heavy manuring culture. Weight of embryo occupies 7-8% of whole grain, which is about three times of that of "Koshihikari". The accumulation of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in embryo is much in germinated brown rice, amount of GABA is about three times of that of "Koshihikari" or "Koganemochi". As GABA is effective to normalize the blood pressure, and so on, recently consumer's concern about GABA is increasing. Grain quality and eating quality of rice cake are slightly inferior to that of "Koganemochi". It is possible to be carried out processing use as healthy foods, such as rice cake of germinated brown rice, and rice cake with giant embryo. This variety seems to possess true blast resistance genes Pia, field resistance to leaf blast is moderate, and field resistance to panicle blast is moderately resistant. This variety is moderately tolerance to lodging, and tolerant to sprouting is moderate, and cool weather tolerance is、weak, "Mebaemochi" can be grown in region from Middle-Tohoku area to Kyushu area of Japan for new uses of brown rice.
