Sugarcane has been grown in mainland Japan since the 18th century. Sugarcane growing and milling weree investigated in eight locations in Kyushu from Fukuoka in the north to Kagoshima inthe south. Most mills are old and distributed around Yatsushiro bay. However, there are several new manufacturers with new milling methods. Most of the sugarcane growers do not have any systematic growing method and rely on experience and perception. As a result, sugarcane mosaic virus is wide spread particularly where sugarcane clones have remained the same for a long time.
