Sugarcane growing and milling weree investigated in eight locations in Kyushu from Fukuoka in the north to Kagoshima inthe south. Most mills are old and distributed around Yatsushiro bay. However, there are several new manufacturers with new milling methods. Most of the sugarcane growers do not have any systematic growing method and rely on experience and perception. As a result, sugarcane mosaic virus is wide spread particularly where sugarcane clones have remained the same for a long time.\n","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"},{"subitem_description":"九州各地では江戸時代から製糖が行われ, 現在確認されただけでも福岡県, 長崎県, 熊本県, 宮崎県および鹿児島県本土でサトウキビが栽培されている。これらのうち8ヵ所を訪ね, 製糖の実態と, 栽培の状況, 特にサトウキビモザイク病の発生状況について調査した。その結果, 九州各地で伝統的な製糖が行われていること, 古くからの製糖所の多くが八代海を取り囲むように分布していることが明らかになった。一方で, 新規参入者もあり, 新たな製法が取り入れられている。しかしながら, これらの地域には, 体系化された栽培技術が存在せず, 試行錯誤で栽培が行われている実態が明らかとなった。また, 現地で栽培されているサトウキビは, 多くがサトウキビモザイク病に罹病しており, 早急な苗の更新が必要であること,
