Population analysis using molecular markers revealed rich diversity in Korean populations of hard seed type comparative to the diversity in soft seed type. A few or several individuals were found in kitchen gardens and around farmers' houses. In the previous exploration of perilla in Shikoku, Japan, 2003, In 2004, we conducted exploration in Shikoku to find a perilla population composed of enough individuals for population analysis. As results, we found oil perilla in the center and the eastern parts of mountainous region in Shikoku. All the oil perilla samples collected in Shikoku were the hard seed type. Most of the farmers either keeping oil perilla now or having kept it before said that they used oil perilla plants growing voluntarily (without sowing) on tea fields, konjak (Amorphophalus konjac K. Koch) fields or vegetable gardens, and they intended to leave one or several perilla plants in weeding. There were three populations cultivated in the size of 30, 200 and 1,000 individuals, respectively. Of the three, the last population was sown and transplanted every year.
