 note = {Local varieties of melon, oriental melon and oriental pickling melon have been replaced by F_1 cultivars newly developed in Japan. In particular, the decrease of old local varieties has been marked in major areas of melon production in last decade. Therefore we explored to collect melon germplasm in Yamagata, Iwate and Miyagi prefectures of Tohoku district, Chiba prefectur of Kanto district, and Shizuoka and Aichi prefectures of Tokai district, from late August to early September in 1992. Local varieties in above mentioned prefecutures or districts were much less than we expected, since almost all farmers used newly developed commercial F_1 cultivars. We collected 85 varieties of melon and one variety of cucumber from farmers, public organizations and private seed companies. These genetic resources will be characterized in the following years.},
