Diverse crop genetic resources. therefore, are expected to distribute in these areas. Against this background, exploration for collecting landraces of grain legumes and millets in Yaeyama Area (Hateruma island) and Miyako Area (Tarama, Ikema and Miyako islands) was carried out from February 18 to 22, 1992.These islands are located approximately 500 km south from Okinawa island. A total of thirty nine samples were collected. As food legumes, 8 samples of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), 4 of mungbean (Vigna radiata), 3 of soybean (Glycine max), and 3 of lablab (Dolichos lablab) were collected. Cowpea is used as a substitute of azuki bean (Vigna angularis). Mungbean and soybean are mainly grown as green manure for sugarcane. Millets had been grown widely before sugarcane was introduced. Several types of landraces were expected to exist in each island. Although millets are still used in some rituals or ceremonies, it was hard to find farmers who still grow millets. Four samples of common millet (Panicum miliaceum), 3 of foxtail millet (Setaria italica) and 3 of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) were collected. In addition to these samples, 4 samples of sesame (Sesumum indicum), 3 of brassica (Brassica juncea) and 2 of wheat (Triticum aestivum) were collected. As observed in the other parts of Japan, landraces seemed to have disappeared rapidly in these islands during last decade. Therefore, it is urgently needed to explore the other islands of these areas.}, pages = {1--7}, title = {沖縄県における雑豆および雑穀類在来品種の探索収集}, volume = {8}, year = {1992}, yomi = {カツタ, マスミ and タケヤ, マサル} }
