G. soja which grows naturally throughout this country and shows a complete crossing compatibility with soybean (G. max) has been thought to be the direct progenitor of soybean. Because G. soja possesses a higher protein content, a wider diversity of subunit polymorphism of seed proteins and a resistance against purple seed stain disease which can not be found in accessions of G. max, this species should be an important germplasm for soybean breeding. Since no systematic collection of G. soja in the Chyubu district has been carried out, we tried to collect the wild soybean in this region. Thirty-three strains of G. soja as well as four strains of the wild azuki bean (Vigna nipponensis) were collected. Most of the wild strains were collected at dry riverbeds, lakesides and roadsides as reported in the other papers. We usually tried to collect only one G. soja strain from one place. However, when more than two populations at one place could be clearly distinguished judging from seed and leaflet morphologies and also plant-maturing levels, they were separately collected as different strains. Four strains of V. nipponensis were accidentally collected together with G.soja.
