Although its cultivated area was 10, 700 hectares in 1955, it decreased to only hundreds hectares during the past 30 years because of economic reason. The perilla (Perilla frutescens) can be cultivated even on high and cool lands where sesame does not grow. Its cultivated area also has decreased as well as the sesame area, and now its seeds are used as a kind of spices in some localities. This work was planed to conserve the surviving local varieties of sesame and perilla as genetic resources in Kanto and Tokai districts, and a total of 72 local varieties were collected in Nagano, Aichi, Saitama, Gunma, Ibaraki Prefectures. On the collection trips, we found the farmers who had sesame and/or perilla, tended to have old people in their families and to have another kind of minor crops. Sesame and perilla were cultivated for the farmers' own use. The sale of sesame for tourists, however, was being tried partially in Chichibu (Saitama Pref.). We have some fears that the ancestral varieties may be disappeared with the change of farmers' generation, and that the multiformity of local varieties may be lost because of the marketability for high quality and uniformity.
