These effects were tested for 6 planting dates over a period of 4 years (2005-2008). Five of the 6 seeding dates were in late April. The mulching materials were polyethylene film with the colors black, green (transparent to some degree), and clear. A spunbonded fabric was used for the row cover. The plots included no-cover plots (control), mulched plots, row covered plots, and plots that received a combination of mulching and row cover. We measured soil temperature and soil volumetric water contents in the surface layers of the rows, and the seedling emergence date in each plot. The results are summarized as follows : 1) The average temperature was increased by 4-5℃, 0-2℃, and about 2℃ respectively, compared with the no-cover controls, when transparent film mulch, black film mulch, and row cover were used. The effect of green mulch was similar to that of black mulch. The increases in soil temperature with black film mulch seemed to vary with the area of the opening, which might affect the ventilation rate between the space beneath the mulch and the ambient air. 2) The combination of row cover with mulching had an additive effect on the temperature increase. 3) Mulching reduced the variation in soil volumetric water content compared with the no-cover control. 4) The length of the period from seeding to emergence depended on soil temperature. The growing degree days (effective accumulated soil temperature) to emergence were calculated to be 96.1℃・days with a base temperature of 7.3℃. 5) We observed high rates of early seedling emergence in all the mulched plots, while emergence was inhibited in the no-cover plots for some planting dates.
