If the irrigation water or vegetable seeds were contaminated with E. coli O157, E. coli grew in the dipping water during germination. In the examination using spray inoculation with E. coli on vegetable seedlings, E. coli O157 grew on the leaf surface of all vegetable seedlings tested under high humidity conditions. E. coli also grew in the hypocotyls tissues of all vegetable seedlings tested when E. coli was inoculated to the hypocotyls by injury inoculation with a single needle.
