Direct-seeding technology has been introduced on some paddy farms, but the use of this technology on paddy farms has not become widespread. A new seeding machine that can operate faster than conventional seeding machines has recently been developed by the Hokkaido Agriculture Research Center. This new seeding machine can also be used for planting seeds of other plants such as soybean and wheat, and it is expected that the newly developed machine will contribute greatly to improvement in paddy farm management. In this study, the economic effect of introduction of direct-seeding technology using the newly developed seeding machine on overall management of paddy farms was clarified by simulation using linear programming. The results of analysis were as follows. Firstly, if direct-seeding technology utilizing the newly developed seeding machine is used instead of transplanting rice culture, production scale will increase by 13.6 ha and annual income will increase by 3.06 million yen. Secondly, production scale and income will be greater in the case of direct-seeding technology using the new seeding machine than in the case of directseeding technology using a conventional seeding machine. Thirdly, although income from rice produced using the new seeding machine will decline, overall income will increase because of the large increase in income from soybeans and wheat.
